Residencias Artísticas

CALA Alliance’s residency program is one of the only programs that fosters Latinx artistic talent in the United States, providing artists with unparalleled resources that enable them to realize innovative, ambitious new work.

CALA Alliance organizes three residencies per year. Each residency cycle includes one regional, Arizona-based Latinx artist found through a yearly open call,  one national Latinx by invitation only, and one exchange artist found through a yearly open call. During their residency period, artists-in-residence are prompted to develop original, research-driven, innovative work. While in residence, artists are also encouraged to share and develop their ideas with the local community and are invited to be part of public programs and community engagements.

The exchange residency is a distinctive aspect to CALA Alliance’s residency program that seeks to create points of connection throughout the Americas. In collaboration with partner organizations in Latin America or the Caribbean, the exchange finds one artist through an open call and the artist will be in residence with CALA Alliance. Past exchanges have connected artists living and working in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, to Arizona. The Guadalajara exchange was organized by CALA Alliance, ASU Art Museum, and PAOS GDL. The current exchange program connects artists living and working in Puerto Rico to those living in Arizona. While in residence, artists develop creative projects and present public programs that establish a dialogue between both sites.

Each CALA Alliance residency includes travel expenses to and from Phoenix, a material stipend of $4,000, an honorarium of $4,000, a studio space, and for those out of the region, a furnished living space. The 12-week residency culminates in an exhibition of new work at one of our partner organizations. Finally, each resident artist receives a limited-run publication produced at the end of their residency period.

Residencias Artísticas residency program is supported in part by an award by the National Endowment for the Arts.
