Sam Winan

Sam Winans is a Mexican American self-taught analog photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona. Sam uses their photos to explore the relationship between their current self and the Latino culture that shaped their early life in order to reestablish a connection to their roots and embrace their lived experiences. Focusing on images representing their Latino background, Sam strives to make a powerful statement on the realities and challenges families living in Maryvale face amidst the rapidly changing Phoenix landscape.

Alongside their artistic practice, Sam helps build the Phoenix event programming for the creative collective Club Rambutan, which focuses on supporting and uplifting emerging artists from intersectional and diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, they support the growth and programming for Native Narratives, an indigenous program at ASU that serves to amplify storytelling in Native students' lives while providing support to prepare them for post-graduate opportunities.
