Now Hiring: Senior Accountant Contractor

CALA Alliance (Celebración Artística de las Américas), a multidisciplinary Latino arts nonprofit based in Phoenix, is searching for an independent contractor to provide accounting services.

The Senior Accountant is responsible for leading all accounting functions and tax reporting requirements of CALA Alliance, a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2010 with an operating budget of $300K and under 5 employees. This position is responsible for all monthly and annual financial reporting, has lead responsibility for completion of IRS Form 990, and assists with the coordination and preparation of the annual budget. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of working independently, being self-directed, and meeting deadlines.

Duties

  • Administers the general accounting, financial and grant reporting functions of the organization in accordance with established policies and accounting procedures.
  • Assures the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, management reports, and tax returns.
  • Coordinate the preparation and filing of the tax return (Form 990), forms 1099 and 1096, and the annual AZ Corporation Commission report.
  • Facilitates the organization’s annual financial review. Recommends changes to policy, process and practice to ensure compliance with GAAP standards.
  • Assists the Executive Director in the annual budget process (operating budget size: $300K).
  • Perform payables and receivables activities (averages per year: 200 A/P vendors, 50 A/R customers, 150 A/P invoices, 100 A/P checks written)
  • Record receipts and make bank deposits (averages per year: 60 customer cash receipts).
  • Process bi-weekly employee payroll (organization size is under 5 employees; payroll is outsourced to PayChex).
  • Produce monthly financial statements.
  • Maintain and update the schedule of Public Support.
  • Track amounts under restriction for major grants and maintain and update the net assets roll forward.
  • Maintain reports of actual results to budget, and report on any significant variances or areas of concern.
  • Maintain orderly systems of filing and recordkeeping in order to ensure readily available and accurate documents.
  • Attend management and board meetings as requested.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in accounting or auditing.
  • Proficiency with accounting software, word processing, and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Adept at fostering a collaborative working environment and developing and maintaining good working relationships with persons at all levels in the organization.
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit accounting is preferred.
  • CPA designation is preferred.

Job Location and Compensation

This is a part-time contractor position that offers a flexible schedule and ability to work from home. The Senior Accountant works under the direction of the Executive Director. Bi-weekly travel to CALA’s offices at Arizona Center in downtown Phoenix is required. Attendance to quarterly board meetings is required. Compensation is based on experience and qualifications.
