GDL>>PHX Residencias Artísticas is an artist residency and cultural exchange program between the cities of Phoenix, Arizona and Guadalajara, Jalisco organized by CALA Alliance, ASU Art Museum and PAOS GDL.
GDL>>PHX Residencias Artísticas offers fully sponsored residencies to artists from Guadalajara to travel and work in Phoenix, Arizona and Latinx artists from Phoenix to travel and work in Guadalajara, Jalisco at the former home and studio of Mexican modernist José Clemente Orozco. This program provides artists the opportunity to grow their creative practice, experiment with new approaches, and investigate complex cultural contexts, while deepening the dialogue between the Phoenix and Guadalajara contemporary arts scenes.
GDL > PHX Residencias Artísticas is the only program in Arizona dedicated to supporting international residencies for Latinx artists. Emerging to mid-career Phoenix Latinx artists are invited to apply for a 6-week residency in Guadalajara for July-August 2019, all expenses covered.
GDL>>PHX Residencias Artísticas is an important initiative that seeks to develop deeper ties between Phoenix and Guadalajara in hope that art can serve as a powerful conduit to create new culture flows between Mexican and American cities.
It is part of a larger initiative by CALA Alliance, ASU Art Museum and PAOS GDL to bolster the relationship between the art scenes in Guadalajara, and Phoenix. Both cities are sometimes ignored in favor of their larger metropolitan counterparts —Mexico City and Los Angeles, respectively— yet today Guadalajara and Phoenix boast thriving arts and culture scenes that are garnering international attention. Guadalajara has a centuries-old history in the arts, particularly crafts and architecture, and contemporary artists have found it a vibrant context to make new art. Phoenix’s desert landscape, cultural diversity and proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border also provide a rich context for new work.
In Guadalajara, PAOS GDL, works in partnership with the Cultural Ministry of Jalisco and the Instituto Cultural Cabañas to organize artist residencies with local, national and international artists with a focus on research, artistic production, cultural investigation and education. In Phoenix, CALA Alliance and ASU Art Museum organize creative collaborations with artists and arts organizations in Arizona, Mexico and Latin America, including artist residencies.
ASU Art Museum, named “the single most impressive venue for contemporary art in Arizona” by Art in America magazine, is part of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. The ASU Art Museum International Artist Residency Program brings artists from around the world to live and work in downtown Phoenix on new collaborative projects in partnership with diverse communities and organizations in Arizona.
PAOS GDL hosts residencies and exhibits in the former residence and studio of the great Mexican Modernist José Clemente Orozco in Guadalajara, Jalisco, México. Its artist residency program, PAOS Residencias, is organized in partnership with the Cultural Ministry of Jalisco and the Instituto Cultural Cabañas. PAOS GDL promotes the work of local, national and international artists, with a focus on artistic production and educational programs.
