Artist Talk and Reception: Karian Amaya

September 17 // 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Join us to welcome the 2019 Guadalajara resident artist in Phoenix, Karian Amaya. Amaya will present a talk about her artistic practice and current research interests, followed by an intimate reception and meet-and-greet.

Amaya was selected as the 2019 resident artist in Phoenix for GDL>>PHX Residencias Artísticas through a competitive process open to emerging and mid-career Guadalajara artists. During her Phoenix residency September 3 – October 12, she will research binational visual and literary responses to the Sonoran Desert, as well as the history and impact of extractive industries on the landscape.

With a practice that encompasses drawing, photography, sculpture, and installation, Karian Amaya explores notions of subjectivity and the self. Inspired by minimalism, and with a deep concern for process and materials, Amaya explores ideas connected to the body, language, time, violence and landscape. Her formative years in northern Mexico influence her work profoundly, as she investigates the politics and poetics of desert landscapes, and the human activities that impact and shape them. Amaya studied at the University of Guadalajara and at the Art Students League of New York. Her work has been exhibited in Mexico, the United States, and Europe. In 2016, she participated in the Biennial of the Border at the El Paso Museum of Art. In 2015, she participated in a mentoring program for immigrant artists at the New York Arts Foundation. She has received awards from PECDA (Programa de Estímulo a la Creación y Desarrollo Artístico), the Alfaro Siqueiros Scholarship (2017), and the Grodman Legacy Grant (2018).

GDL>>PHX Residencias Artísticas is an artist residency and cultural exchange program between the cities of Phoenix, Arizona and Guadalajara, Jalisco organized by CALA Alliance (Celebración Artística de las Americas), ASU Art Museum and Programa Anual de Open Studios (PAOS GDL). It offers fully sponsored residencies to artists from Guadalajara to travel and work in Phoenix, Arizona and to Latinx and indigenous artists from Phoenix to travel and work in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Artists will develop creative projects and present public programs that establish a dialogue between both cities. This is the only program in Arizona dedicated to supporting international residencies for Latinx and indigenous artists.

This program is organized by CALA Alliance, ASU Art Museum and PAOS GDL with generous support from the Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation.
