Join resident artists Leslie García and Paloma López (Interspecifics) for an audiovisual performance based on research and creative work as part of GDL>>PHX: Residencias Artísticas.
Speculative Communications/Comunicaciones Especulativas is a work in progress that focuses on the creation of an Artificial Intelligence machine with the ability to learn from microorganisms. The machine observes the behavior of biological cultures, like bacteria, and assigns musical and visual gestures to their biological signals to create an audiovisual composition that can be performed. Inspired by research centers such as SETI (The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), Speculative Communications/ Comunicaciones Especulativas presents a poetic and expansive view of the possibilities of communication between species and machines.
The artist collective Interspecifics has been selected as the 2018 Guadalajara resident artist for GDL>>PHX Residencias Artísticas. During their residency in Phoenix March 23-May 6, 2018, Interspecifics will develop artistic projects and present a variety of programs free to the public.
Through their engineering-intensive projects, artists Leslie García and Paloma López work at the intersection of science, nature and art, and use sound and Artificial Intelligence to understand the bioelectrical and chemical signals of living organisms as nonhuman forms of communication. The work of Interspecifics is deeply shaped by the Latin American context, where precarity enables new forms of creativity, and ancient technologies meet cutting-edge forms of production.
GDL>>PHX Residencias Artísticas is an artist residency and cultural exchange program between the cities of Phoenix, Arizona and Guadalajara, Jalisco organized by CALA Alliance, ASU Art Museum and PAOS GDL with generous support from the Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation.
