Crossfade LAB with Rita Indiana and Calexico

October 3, 2016 // 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Crossfade LAB welcomes Dominican-born writer, composer, and performance artist Rita Indiana and the Tucson, Arizona based band Calexico. Whether through music or literature, live performance or composition, the Caribbean or the U.S. Southwest, both artists have paid keen attention to issues of national tradition and the borders of identity, while delving into the roles of mythology, popular culture, and cultural heritage in how everyday people survive and thrive amidst precarious conditions.

Moderated by Crossfade LAB co-curator Josh Kun, the evening will be a blend of genres and geographies, and a mix of storytelling, ideas, and live performance.

Crossfade LAB is organized with generous support from the Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation and in collaboration with Crescent Ballroom and ASU Art Museum.

About the artists and moderator:

Josh Kun is an author, academic, curator and music critic. He is the recipient of a 2016 MacArthur Fellowship. His research focuses on the arts and politics of cultural connection, with an emphasis on popular music, the cultures of globalization, the US-Mexico border, Los Angeles and Jewish-American musical history.

Rita Indiana is a music composer, producer and rising star of contemporary Caribbean literature. She is the author of two short story collections and four novels, including the acclaimed Papi. In 2010, she released her first and only studio album, El Juidero, with the Dominican alternative merengue band Rita Indiana y Los Misterios. She is a writer for the Spanish newspaper El País, which in 2011 named her one of the 100 most influential Latinos.

Calexico is a Tucson, Arizona based band which has, for the better part of two decades, crossed musical barriers, embracing a multitude of styles, variety in instrumentation, and well-cultivated signature sounds. With their most recent record Edge of the Sun they take inspiration from a trip to a place surprisingly unexplored by the band before in Mexico City, and with the benefit of many friends and comrades to help guide the way.
