*This event runs from 6:00-8:00pm on June 2

Join us for a family celebration honoring children’s creativity and learning as part of the school arts program How I Became an Artista. Come see children’s artwork on display and enjoy live Cuban music, food and performances!

Live music by Victor Caldee and His Cuban Connection

How I Became an Artista is an arts and cultural literacy program organized by CALA Alliance, Childsplay and ASU Art Museum that introduces elementary students in Phoenix to the life and work of Latino/a and Latin American artists. Through reading, movement and art-making, Phoenix Latinx teaching artists in the visual and performing arts tell the story of how children become artistas who celebrate culture and make new traditions.

In May 2017, How I Became an Artista celebrated the life and work of Cuban music legend Celia Cruz in third and fourth grade classrooms in Metro Phoenix:

  • Reading: Students read the bilingual English/Spanish book My Name is Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz by Monica Brown, and got a copy to take home.
  • Critical Thinking: Students learned about the life and work of Celia Cruz through musical/visual presentations and discussion.
  • Movement and Art-Making: Students created visual and movement-based works inspired by the art of Celia Cruz.
  • Celebration: Students will exhibit and share their art in a family-friendly community celebration.
